Newspapers in Australia
Australian Newspapers offers online access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. This free service currently contains over 2.2+ million out of copyright, newspaper pages from all Australian states dating from 1803-1954. New digitised pages are being added each week. Currently 55 titles are online with 23 million articles available to full-text search. By 2011 over 40 million articles will be available. This site is fully searchable and offers many search options. Search results can be refined using filters. Read the online help to refine your searching. Some of the n ewspapers available include the Advertiser (Adelaide), Argus (Melbourne), Brisbane Courier, Canberra Times, Courier-Mail (Brisbane), Hobart Town Gazette and Southern Reporter, Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen's Land Advertiser, Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Mercury (Hobart), Moreton Bay Courier, Northern Territory Times, Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal, South Australian Advertiser, Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser and the Sydney Morning Herald. Currently regional newspapers are being added.  Updated

Victoria Government Gazette Online Archive 1836-1997. This fully searchable site contains digitised images of the New South Wales Government Gazette (1836-1851), Port Phillip Government Gazette (1843-1851) and Victoria Government Gazette (1851-1997).     

Newspapers Overseas
The following subscription newspaper sites are available through the National Library of Australia eResources. Residents of Australia can apply to the National Library of Australia for a Library Card and this will enable them to access the following newspaper sites and a wide variety of other subscription sites from home for free. The eResources page has an online video that explains how to access material. New 
17th- 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers. This collection of newspapers, pamphlets, and books gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) totals almost 1 million pages and contains approximately 1,270 titles.

19th Century British Library Newspapers offers full runs of national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers. Part 1 includes 49 titles (over 2.2 million pages), selected to reflect the social and political developments of the times in which they were published. Part II includes 22 additional titles (1 million pages) and aims to increase the range of English regional newspapers and expand the political views it represents. A List of Titles, places covered and date range for parts I and II is available. 

Times Digital Archive 1785-1985 has millions of articles from the London Times. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.

The Illustrated London News Historical Archive 1842-2003 provides complete access to every issue of this illustrated newspaper for a period of 160 years. The contents are fully searchable, and users can browse individual issues, including specials and supplements.

Ireland
Irish Newspaper Archives . This subscription site offers access to over 6 million pages from Irish national and regional newspapers. A free keyword search is available and fees apply to access to digitized copies of the newspapers. Australian residents can access this site for free from home through the National Library of Australia eResources.

Newspaper Indexes Australia
The Ryerson Index is an index to death notices appearing in current Australian newspapers. It also includes some funeral notices, probate notices and obituaries. This ongoing project currently contains over 2.5+ million entries from 177 newspapers including the Adelaide Advertiser (2001-), Brisbane Courier Mail (2000-), Canberra Times (2003-), Hobart Mercury (2008-), Melbourne The Age (1998-), Melbourne Herald Sun (2003-), Northern Territory News (2009-), Sydney Morning Herald (1831-), Sydney Mail (1860-1889) and Sydney Daily Telegraph (1936-) plus numerous country newspapers.  Updated

News Limited Click the Announcements tab for current birth, death, marriage and funeral notices from the The Australian, Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, Courier-Mail, The Advertiser, The Mercury and others. 

Fairfax Newspapers offers access to Notices (births, deaths, funerals, in memoriams, engagements and marriages) for one week. Includes the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong), the Newcastle Herald & Post and community newspapers (Sydney).

News Store  offers searches of Fairfax publications including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong) Central Coast Herald (Gosford/Wyong) and the Newcastle Herald from 1990 to today. It is free to search but a small charge applies to view the full text of an article.

Sydney Morning Herald Archives with access to digitised copies of the Herald and Sun-Herald 1955-1990. All articles, captions, classifieds and advertisements are keyword searchable. Results are returned as digital reproductions of the printed pages as originally published. It is free to search with various subscription options for full access to digitised copies of the full articles and page results.

National Library of Australia Online Index to the Argus (Melbourne) 1870-1879. The index can be browsed or keyword searched. This site does not provide online access to the full text of the paper.

Old News Copy offers indexes to random years of 55+ Victorian newspapers from 1840s onwards. A search returns name, year, area and publication. Copies of relevant pages are available for a small fee. 

Infoquick is a selective index to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, Good Weekend, Eastern Herald and Northern Herald from January 1988 to June 2005.

State Library of Victoria, Australiana Index offers online searches of biographical and local history references from newspapers, journals, books and in-house files. 

Sydney Morning Herald In Memoriam Indexes by Ken Campbell are searchable by surname.
