National Library of Australia. Australian Newspapers Online. This site offers online access to Australian newspapers. Select newspapers by title, state, town.There is also a search facility for Australian journals online. 

Australian Newspapers Beta Newservice offers access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. This free service currently contains 73,000+, out of copyright, newspaper pages from 1803 onwards with 20,000+ new digitised pages to be added each week. Newspapers available include the Argus (Melbourne), Brisbane Courier, Canberra Times, Courier-Mail (Brisbane), Hobart Town Gazette and Southern Reporter, Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen's Land Advertiser, Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Mercury (Hobart), Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal, South Australian Advertiser and Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser.

Onlinenewspapers.com. This site is searchable for online newspapers by geographic region.

World Newspapers. A searchable directory of online newspapers, magazines and news sites.

PawredNewspaper Indexes
The Ryerson Index Upby Sydney DPS. This ongoing project is indexing contemporary death notices and obituaries in Australian newspapers. The online database currently contains 1,781,741 entries from 136 newspapers. Includes death notices in the Adelaide Advertiser (2001-), Brisbane Courier Mail (2000-), Canberra Times (2003-), Melbourne The Age (1998-), Melbourne Herald Sun (2004-), Sydney Morning Herald (1831-), Sydney Mail (1860-1889) and Sydney Daily Telegraph (1936-) plus numerous country newspapers (mostly NSW).

News Limited site where current birth, death, marriage and funeral notices can be searched. Papers include The Australian, Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, Courier-Mail, The Advertiser, The Mercury and others.

Fairfax Newspapers offers access to Notices (births, deaths, funerals, in memoriams, engagements and marriages) for one week. Includes the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong), the Newcastle Herald & Post and community newspapers (Sydney).

News Store  offers searches of Fairfax publications including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong) Central Coast Herald (Gosford/Wyong) and the Newcastle Herald from 1990 to today. It is free to search but a small charge applies to view the full text of an article.

Sydney Morning Herald Archives  with access to digitised copies of the Herald and Sun-Herald 1955-1990. All articles, captions, classifieds and advertisements are keyword searchable. Results are returned as digital reproductions of the printed pages as originally published. It is free to search with various subscription options for full access to digitised copies of the full articles and page results.

National Library of Australia Online Index to the Argus (Melbourne) 1870-1879. The index can be browsed or keyword searched. This site does not provide online access to the full text of the paper.

Port Phillip Herald Archive. This site offers fully searchable online access to the Port Phillip Herald 1840-1902. Scanned images of the original papers are available online. A search of the index is free and a surname search returns date of newspaper, page number and section (eg news). A monthly or yearly subscription is required to access the scanned images.

OzLife is a selective index to articles about prominent Australians appearing in major Australian newspapers from September 2000 to July 2005.

Old News Copy offers indexes to random years of 55+ Victorian newspapers from 1840s onwards. A search returns name, year, area and publication. Copies of relevant pages are available for a small fee. 

Infoquick is a selective index to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, Good Weekend, Eastern Herald and Northern Herald from January 1988 to June 2005.

State Library of Victoria, Australiana Index offers online searches of biographical and local history references from newspapers, journals, books and in-house files. 

Sydney Morning Herald In Memoriam Indexes by Ken Campbell are searchable by surname.

Toowoomba Dead Persons Society. Click on Newspaper Indexing for indexes to The Chronicle (Toowoomba), Cairns Post, The Gatton Star, Daily News (Warwick) and Queensland Times (Ipswich).
