Trove Digitised Newspapers  offers free access to the full text of 242+ Australian newspaper titles dating from 1803 to 1954 (some later).
The main state title is listed and the numbers in brackets are the number of titles available for that state.

Sydney Morning Herald Archives with 820,000 pages from 13,000 issues 1st January 1955 to February 1995. The contents of all issues of the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Herald are fully text searchable including advertisements, captions and birth, death and marriage notices. Full-text results are returned in an exact digital reproduction of the printed pages as they were originally published. Use the SMH archives in conjunction with the Ryerson Index to locate death notices. A variety of subscription options are available. Australian Periodical Publications (1840-1845). This site, by the National Library of Australia, provides access to digital copies of Australian serials. Currently over 70 titles are available.

Victoria Government Gazette Online Archive 1836-1997. This fully searchable site contains digitised images of the New South Wales Government Gazette (1836-1851), Port Phillip Government Gazette (1843-1851) and Victoria Government Gazette (1851-1997).    

Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. This site offers access to Online Collections which include the Koori Mail (1991-2011), Dawn and New Dawn magazines (1952-1975). 

Infokoori. An index to the Koori Mail from May 1991 plus an index to biographical information from Our Aim (1907-1961), Dawn (1952-1969), New Dawn (1970-1975) and Identity (1971-1982). Digitised copies of the Koori Mail (1991-2011), Dawn and New Dawn magazines (1952-1975) are available on the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies site above.

Newspapers Overseas
The National Library of Australia eResources page offers home access to 94+ subscription databases. This free service is available to anyone residing in Australia who has a National Library card. You can Apply for a Library Card online from this site. The card will be mailed to you within 5-10 working days. You then use the number on the card and your surname to login. Click on the Licenced resources (yellow keys icon) to access the alphabetical lists of available databases. The eResources page has an online video that explains how to access material.

The British Newspaper Archive. This new ongoing project currently has 174 titles online with over 3 million newspaper pages available. The earliest title dates from 1700 and the most current, 1949. It is free to search with keyword, publication and browse by location searches available. Filtering options include date, newspaper, region, county and place. A search returns a sentence or two of the newspaper. A subscription is needed to access the digitised page. This site offers several subscription packages including a 12 month subscription (£79.95) which gives unlimited access to every page in the archive. Alternatively there are 30 day (3000 credits -  £29.95)  and 2 day (500 credits - £6.95) pay-per-view packages.  New

Gazettes - This sites offers access to the official newspapers of the United Kingdom government, the Edinburgh Gazette, the London Gazette and the Belfast Gazette,  These gazettes offers access to insolvency data, bankruptcy, public and legal notices plus honours and awards (for government, business or individuals). 

Onlinenewspapers.com. This site is searchable for online newspapers by geographic region.

World Newspapers. A searchable directory of online newspapers, magazines and news sites.

Internet Library of Early Journals. Digitised 18th century journals include The Annual Register, Gentleman's Magazine and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. 19th century journals include Notes and Queries (covers genealogy),The Builder and Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine .

Ireland
Irish Newspaper Archives. This subscription site offers access to over 6 million pages from Irish national and regional newspapers. A free keyword search is available and fees apply to access to digitized copies of the newspapers. Australian residents can access this site for free from home through the National Library of Australia eResources.

Newspaper Indexes  Australia
The Ryerson Index is an index to death notices appearing in current Australian newspapers. It also includes some funeral notices, probate notices and obituaries. This ongoing project currently contains over 3.4+ million entries from 199 newspapers including the Adelaide Advertiser (2001-), Brisbane Courier Mail (2000-), Canberra Times (2003-), Hobart Mercury (2008-), Melbourne The Age (1998-), Melbourne Herald Sun (2003-), Northern Territory News (2009-), Sydney Morning Herald (1831-), Sydney Mail (1860-1889) and Sydney Daily Telegraph (1936-) plus numerous country newspapers.  Updated

News Limited. Click Public NoticesAnnouncements  for current birth, death, marriage and funeral notices from the The Australian, Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph, Courier-Mail, The Advertiser, The Mercury and others. 

Fairfax Newspapers offers access to Notices (births, deaths, funerals, in memoriams, engagements and marriages) for one week. Includes the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong), the Newcastle Herald & Post and community newspapers (Sydney).

News Store  offers searches of Fairfax publications including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne), Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong) Central Coast Herald (Gosford/Wyong) and the Newcastle Herald from 1990 to today. It is free to search but a small charge applies to view the full text of an article.

National Library of Australia Online Index to the Argus (Melbourne) 1870-1879. The index can be browsed or keyword searched. This site does not provide online access to the full text of the paper.

Old News Copy offers indexes to random years of 55+ Victorian newspapers from 1840s onwards. A search returns name, year, area and publication. Copies of relevant pages are available for a small fee. 

Infoquick is a selective index to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, Good Weekend, Eastern Herald and Northern Herald from January 1988 to June 2005.

LINC Tasmania  brings together the State Library of Tasmania, the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office (TAHO) and others. TAHO online indexes include:
• The Tasmanian Index 1966-1994 to articles in the three metropolitan Tasmanian newspapers: the Mercury, the Examiner and the Advocate, and to many other Tasmanian journals and regional newspapers. Most articles are indexed, but there are some exclusions (including routine sport reports and results, and reports of court proceedings)
• The Tasmanian Index 1994+
• Wayn Index to Tasmanian Government records and colonial newspapers
• Whitfeld Index (Tasmanian Section). A selective personal name index for 19th century Tasmania compiled by Mary Lavinia Whitfeld from Tasmanian newspapers of the colonial period

State Library of Victoria, Australiana Index offers online searches of biographical and local history references from newspapers, journals, books and in-house files. 

Sydney Morning Herald In Memoriam Indexes by Ken Campbell are searchable by surname.
